Holland again progressed to the final of World Cup in 1978. Neeskens played terrifically but could not find his name on the score sheet. He could not score in the six games he played in Argentina, but he contributed greatly in midfield that set up several goals for his team. The Dutch was defeated for the second time in a row in the final of World Cup. This time it was against Argentina.

Like several other stars of that period Neeskens went to America for playing in NASL towards his career end. He played with New York Cosmos for six seasons and then came back home. He had several memorable moments in soccer including European Cup titles three times and two finals of the World Cup.

Rivelino was 24 years old when he played at the World Cup, 1970 in Mexico. Many experts regard this Brazilian team of 1970 as the best ever soccer team. It had some of the finest players and Rivelino was one of them. He scored three spectacular goals in it. This included his trademark free-kick against the Czechoslovakia team in their first game.

After four years in West Germany, the Brazilian team did not have the same charisma of 1970. They managed to get the fourth place in this event. Rivelino played to his level in this tournament but it was not enough.

In 1978, he spent much time on the benches. Young players such as Zico were coming up to establish their place in the national team. Rivelino approached the end of his career gradually. But, he displayed in the few opportunities he got his amazing capability.  He helped his team come from behind and defeat Italy to grab the third place.

Rivelino was a great offensive midfielder this game has seen. He played mostly in his career for Corinthians. He was known for his loyalty. He retired from this sport in 1981 after a glorious career.

By the time World Cup, 1982 in Spain arrived Rummenigge was a superstar in this sport. There were huge expectations from him in this event. But, he could not perform to his best due to knee problems. Manager Jupp Derwall played him in a cautious way. His memorable performances came against France in the semifinal as well as the hat-trick he scored against Chile.

During semifinal West Germany were 3-1 down but they came back strongly first to equalize and then defeat France on penalties. It is interesting to note that Rummenigge scored a goal that reduced the margin of lead to 3-2. After that he was part of the attack in which Klaus Fischer scored the equalizer. But the German team could not match the Italian side and were beaten 3-1 in the final.

Four years later the World Cup, 1986 in Mexico arrived. Rummenigge was not fully fit to play again. But Coach Franz Beckenbauer wanted him to perform. He played in all the games mainly as a substitute.West Germany were impressive and once again went till the final. This final match against Argentina was Kalle’s last international and he was captaining his side. Argentina became champions with a 3-2 victory. Rummenigge contributed by scoring one goal for his team. He was the first captain to be defeated in two finals of the World Cup.

Several athletes and nations could not afford to pay the price of trip. Less than half of the participants at the Summer Olympics, 1928 in Amsterdam came back for competition in 1932. Herbert Hoover, President of US, did not attend these games.

There were several great moments at these games. For the first time victory podium was used. Eddie Tolan of United States won the gold medal in both 100 meters and 200 meters events.  Bill Carr of United States won the title in 400 meters race. Ed Gordon from US won the men’s long jump event.

The US team won both the men’s 4 × 100 meters as well as 4 × 400 meters relay events. These performances show the dominance of United States in athletics at these games.

American swimmer Helene Madison gave amazing performances in swimming. She won three titles for her country. The Japanese swimmers gave breathtaking show in the men’s category of swimming. They won all the titles expect one.

Takeichi Nishi with his horse Uranus won gold medal in the individual show jumping equestrian event. This gold medal of Nishi is the only gold medal for Japan in equestrian event till now. Babe Didrikson from United States had a good outing at these games. She bagged two gold medals – one in javelin and the other in hurdles event. She also bagged the silver medal in high jump event.

India won the gold medal in field hockey while Japan won the silver and USA won the bronze. Lauri Lehtinen of Finland won the 5000 meters race. Janusz Kusociński from Poland won the title in 10000 meters race. James Bausch of USA bagged the gold medal in decathlon.

This exceptional full-back player was always known for giving his best. He was skillful, committed and played superbly in the air. He represented his national team in three World Cups. Everybody remembers the World Cup in 1986 because of Diego Maradona’s marvelous display. But Oscar Ruggeri also played a significant role for Argentina. He scored a fabulous third goal for Argentina in the 3-1 win over South Korea in their first match. He was a crucial part of Argentina defense as the team conceded just 5 goals from 7 games in this event.

In 1990, Argentina got a shock defeat by Cameroon in the first round. Then defending champions played fine to beat the Brazilian team in the round of sixteen and hosts Italy in semifinal on penalties to reach the final. They conceded only 4 goals from 7 matches, but Argentina could not repeat the magic of Mexico 1986. They were beaten by Germany in the final.

Four years later Romania knocked out Argentina at the World Cup, 1994 and Ruggeri ended his international career of 11 year. He appeared for his national team in 97 matches which was a record later broken by Diego Simeone.
